Baconater Burger

This is the fifth in a series of articles where I will be travelling around Sydney looking for the best burgers to eat and compiling the ultimate list. Just some house rules to address

  • Burger shop must be located within the borders of Greater Sydney
  • Fast food burgers are eligible, although the chances of them competing with the gourmet burgers are slim, so they won’t feature too much here
  • The final score will be comprised of the following components
  • Presentation (Out of 5)
  • Bread (Out of 3)
  • Patty (Out of 5)
  • Chips (Out of 2)
  • Taste (Out of 5)
  • Overall score will be out of 20

So the fifth burger shop that will be reviewed is one of my favourite burger places on this planet, “Milk Bar by Cafe Ish”. It has a cute hole-in-the-wall vibe to it, and is a 5 minute walk from Redfern station.

I have frequented this burger joint so many times, and each time I visit, I always leave with good memories and a happy stomach. For this visit, I got the Baconater burger, which consists of a 150g beef patty wrapped in bacon, American cheese, smoked maple aioli, red onion, bacon Jam and peanut butter. I saw peanut butter and I was convinced to get it.

Presentation (4.5/5)

They serve the burgers in the same plastic bowls the way you see french fries served in American sitcoms like saved by the bell which i like appreciate a lot. Brings a retro vibe to the atmosphere.

As you can see in the picture below, the burger looked great, very plump, and had a nice long bacon strip like it had its own tongue

Bread (3/3)

They used to make their own bread but I guess due to budget reasons they stopped doing that. However the bread they are using now is still pretty good. It was toasted well, had some volume but not too thick and it tasted well and soft and pillowy like a cloud.

Patty (4.5/5)

The patty was very nice. It was moist, not too dense and not a smash patty (which is my favourite), but it had so much flavour. Some burger places have their patties way too small and you need to have an extra patty to get full. However I never have that problem at Milk Bar with just a single patty.

Chips (2/2)

Milk Bar has the best chips ever. Period! They’re deep fried twice and battered like how the Koreans deep fry. They're super crunchy but have fluffiness within the centre. These chips are so unique I haven’t been able to find any thing similar in Sydney.

Chips are great

Taste (5/5)

The Baconater had so much amazing taste. The sweet flavour you get from the peanut butter and BBQ sauce, mixed with the tanginess of the raw onions and the amazing patty, you have got a good recipe for an amazing taste explosion. The flavours gel so well together.

Overall (19/20)

One of my favourite burger joints in the world, I will always come back here to try some of their classic burgers and their wacky specials. If you love burgers, make Milk Bar by Cafe Ish a place you need to stop by.
